We arrived at the hospital early Friday morning as told, only to find out I was last on the list! This meant that we would be spending most of the day waiting around. YAY! haha nah it wasn't to bad, the Pre-Surg nurses gave me and mum a pager so we could go wander around. At 11.30 we were to be back in Pre-Surg as this would be when the team who would be doing my surgery would start to come and give us a brief on what would be happening.
The first to come see us was the anaesthetist he told me what he'd be doing to keep me from feeling anything while the surgery was happening and what pain relief I could receive. This is where my first fear was relieved, He told me I didn't have to have an epidural unless I really wanted one, which of course I really didn't! That was what scared me most about the whole procedure, only because I didn't fully understand what it meant. Someone had told me I wouldn't be able to walk and that it would hurt getting it done in the first place.
The second doctor to come see us was one of the surgeons, he came down to explain what exactly they would be doing and what the risks involved were etc. Most of these we knew... then he mentioned doing something to my Kidneys! Me and mum just looked at each other 'What the??' He then explained that the area where my bowel was so inflamed, was in the same area as the tube that connects the bladder to the kidney so in order to protect the tube from being cut accidental they would first stick a catheter (stint) inside so they could see it. This stint will then be removed in 6 weeks or so apparently =S We were then left to wait till about 12.30 when the nurse came and stuck angel cream on my hands so that when the stuck the iv in when I got to theatre it wouldn't hurt! Gotta love the kids hospital =D At 2pm the time finally arrived, the nurse walked us to the theatre where they sat me on a bed. They then wheeled me into the room where they put you to sleep. That's the last thing I remember =P
I awoke later that night and was told that approximately 26cm of my bowel was removed and they had also found the cause of my sore leg! They found an abscess (pretty much a bag of pus, eww) attached to the muscle of my leg! The doctor was surprised that I only had a slight limp because of it, and that I wasn't in heaps more pain. (All thanks to God I say!!)
Recovery went really well! Again I surprised the doctors and the best part was I wasn't feeling any pain, only using the morphine to sleep and for those damn heparin injections GO GOD! =D I was able to get up to the toilet on Saturday, already starting to feel hungry and hearing noises in my tummy on Sunday, STARVING Monday but still not allowed to eat or drink :( Tuesday I was finally allowed clear fluids so the ward went through there jelly, juice and cordial pretty quick hehe and then Wednesday! I was allowed to eat!! My first meal toast and honey with apple juice. YUM! THURSDAY HOME!!
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. God really did answer them and is continuing to do so with a speedy recovery! GOD IS GREAT!!
Love and GodBless
